Guardians Beyond the Grave

Maybe it’s just the time of the year, but I always find my ancestral spirits on my mind more during the fall and winter.  I believe that our ancestral spirits both from this lifetime and previous ones are always around, watching over us, and offering help and guidance whenever they can.  Over the years, I’ve had a few amazing experiences with the spirits of my maternal grandparents, Grandpa Freddie and Grandma Tessie.

Grandpa Freddie used to watch me after school when I was a little girl.  I was over his house almost every day.  After my homework was done, we used to sit and read or watch TV together.  Once a week, we would feed the birds outside of his house.  He would sing to me, cook special meals for me, and watch over me while I played.  He was the best grandpa that anyone could ask for.  I adored him and was heartbroken when he died.

After graduating college, I got a job teaching high school English.  Many people have a difficult first year teaching.  In addition to juggling lesson plans and managing a classroom, you’re also dealing with parents and school politics.  It’s a challenging, and often thankless profession.  Couple these obstacles with a failing institution, and you have the perfect combination for burnout.  Within a few weeks, I had a sinking feeling that teaching wasn’t for me.  I did my best, but by the end of the first semester, I was let go.  I refused to give 90s to the students who didn’t want to work, and that apparently with my struggles as a new teacher, was enough to fire me.

Unfortunately, this was just as the economy crashed.  Being new to the workforce, I fell into the category of knowledgeable, but inexperienced.  Constantly scouring the internet for opportunities that didn’t exist left me feeling useless.  I didn’t have any inclination to do the things that brought me joy, like reading and writing.  Eventually, I started to spiral into a deep, dark depression.

Then one night, I had a strange dream.  I heard my name being called from my living room.  I saw the shadow of a male spirit sitting on the couch.  As I approached, the figure turned into my Grandpa Freddie.  I remember that he was wearing trousers with a dark blue flannel, V-neck shirt.  He even had on a fedora.  This is the same kind of outfit that he used to wear when he was alive.

“Grandpa?” I asked in surprise.  “What are you doing here?”

“Tara, you have to stop crying.  Everything is going to be okay, but you have to stop crying so much.  It’s upsetting all of us.”

His answer implied that my other relatives in the Spirit World were concerned, as well.  I was stunned that they knew about it, but I promised that I would do as he asked.  That was all I remembered of the dream, but it gave me hope that things would get better.  Within a few weeks, I had started writing, and then I found a part-time office job a couple of months later.  It is important to note that my grandparents were children during the Great Depression, so they knew what it was to overcome real struggle.

Grandma Tessie died of a rare form of cancer three years before I was born.  My grandfather had little, porcelain bird statues set up around his house that had belonged to Grandma.  I used to beg Grandpa Freddie for stories about Grandma Tessie.  He would tell me that she had been a deeply loving person who enjoyed nature, singing, reading, and helping others.  I always wished that I had had the chance to meet her.

My husband and I had just bought our first home and were having issues with some of the appliances.  The seller hadn’t told us that the refrigerator was on its last legs.  Fortunately, we discovered this before buying groceries.  We ordered a refrigerator that day, but the store said it would take another two weeks for delivery.  Between the move itself and this mishap, we had been eating takeout and microwave meals for a while.

My husband and I are generally healthy eaters.  I tend to be more diet conscious than he is because my body is sensitive to large amounts of salt or preservatives in food.  We were still a week away from getting our refrigerator when my legs swelled up from the knee down.  I discovered this at work and didn’t have time to see the doctor until the next day.

By the time I got home, I was panicking about whether I was going to be okay.  I sat down on the couch, meaning to rest for just a few minutes before ordering dinner.  My husband wasn’t home yet, so I was all alone.

I had just started to doze off, when I felt someone come into the room.  A sweet female voice said, “Don’t worry, Tara.  Everything’s going to be fine.”  I made out the figure of a dark-haired woman wearing a bright yellow dress standing by the couch.

As I looked at the woman, I started to sit up.  “Grandma Tessie…” I said, but she was already gone.  I don’t know if I entered a semi-trance in my sleep somehow or if I was starting to dream, but she came through to let me know that I was going to be okay.

The times that their spirits appeared to me, I was not consciously asking for help or thinking about my grandparents.  Also, even though I had never met my grandmother while she was alive, I still recognized her by the sound of her voice.  While I had seen pictures of her before, her voice is what caught my attention.

The Spirit World has a marvelous ability to tap into our world at just the right moment.  There is always someone out there guiding and watching over us, even if we don’t realize it.  No matter how frightened we may be, we are never alone because love transcends death.

The Soul Memory

From early childhood, I have had dreams about spirits coming to visit me.  This dream was different from all the others though because the person is still alive.  My grandmother was recently diagnosed with dementia, although it probably was developing for years.  The strange dream came a few weeks after she moved into a home for the elderly and disabled.

I received a message that someone was there to talk to me.  In the dream, I exited my bedroom to find myself in a long hallway.  A blue light coming from one of the rooms indicated the presence of a spirit.  As I entered what appeared to be a large, old-fashioned nursery, the ghostly image of an elderly woman began to take shape at a table in the center of the room.  Thinking she looked familiar, I walked up to her to get a better look.

“Grandma?” I asked.

She smiled at me and nodded.  This was my grandma who loved cooking, reading stories to children, and taking care of all the kids in our family and around her neighborhood.  When she talked, she looked and sounded just like I remember her.  I asked her if she was okay and she said, “Yes.”  She wanted to know what was going on in my life, so I told her.

Grandma knew that I always wanted to be a writer.  By the time I got into my writing career, carrying on conversations with her had become difficult.  So, I always told her that I was writing, but not about my interests in or having encounters with spirits.  It was just something I didn’t discuss with her.  Toward the end of the dream, I asked her, “Grandma, do you know what I do?”

She smiled at me.  “Why do you think I’m here?”  Then she hugged me again.  At that moment, I felt such a deep love radiating from her and I knew that she loves me just as I am.

I believe in something called the “Soul Memory.”  While it includes the memories that we make in life, our “Soul Memory” is the sum of all the memories that we choose to carry on with us from all our incarnations.  During life, most people only have access to the current lifetime’s memories and the others are kept hidden.  These become accessible once more after they have crossed over into the afterlife.

I believe that the “Soul Memory” stays intact no matter what happens to the body.  The brain is like a computer that processes our experiences and turns the important parts into memories based on the emotions that we attach to these events.  With the “Soul Memory,” even if the brain is unable to function properly due to disease, age, or some other condition, the memories are still preserved.

This spirit visitation helped me start to come to peace about what is happening to my grandma.  Yes, I am still sad, but I know that she is cared for and loved.  I go and see her regularly, even though she doesn’t remember me in the same way anymore.  When I tell her that I am her granddaughter and that I love her, I know that a deeper part of her understands.  The person that we love is never really gone because the soul is eternal and love transcends all boundaries.

What Dreams are Made Of

Thanks to Linda from New Jersey for this story! To read more about Linda’s psychic and paranormal experiences, please see Her Daughter’s Guardian Angel and A Grave Message

It’s not easy to interpret one’s dreams.  Symbols and messages that make sense while asleep often lose their logic after we wake.  Some people don’t even remember most of their dreams.  Others, keep a dream journal to record what they can recall before it grows hazy and is forgotten.  Many cultures believe in Dreamers, a type of Medium who does psychic and spiritual work while they are dreaming.  These stories might make you question the line between dreaming and reality.

When her son and daughter were young, Linda used to participate in a carpool.  When it was Linda’s turn, it meant taking her friend’s three kids along with her own children.  It was about a twenty-minute ride to the school.  One night, Linda had a dream that she hit a deer while she was driving.  In the dream, the animal’s back leg kicked her in the head as it crashed through the windshield.  Thankfully, the kids were not present in this dream.  Deeply disturbed by this nightmare and knowing that she sometimes had prophetic dreams, Linda vowed to be extra careful on the road.  When nothing happened, she chalked it up to nervousness about the commute.

Many years later, the dream suddenly came back.  Linda’s children were now all grown up.  She called and asked them to please be careful while driving.  Accustomed to their mother’s strange dreams, they promised to use caution.  The daughter phoned a little while later, saying that she had arrived at her destination safely.  Linda could sense that something was wrong when her son didn’t call.

When she did eventually hear from her son, he was reluctant to tell her that he had had an accident.  The guy in front of him had hit a deer.  Somehow during the collision, the deer’s body had flown over the other person’s car and through her son’s windshield.  The creature landed in the passenger seat next to her son, who was miraculously unharmed.

Another dream that Linda had helped save her life.  Her father died at sixty-eight from stomach cancer.  One night, she dreamt that her father’s spirit came to visit her.  He told her that he knew that her stomach had been hurting her for quite some time and he urged her to go see the doctor as soon as possible.  Given what had happened to him, Linda decided to take his advice.  The gastroenterologist examined her and sent her for an endoscopy.  The test results revealed a large tumor in her stomach.  Fortunately, they had caught the problem in time and Linda was able to recover with treatment.

My Cat Sees Orbs

Orbs are a controversial subject in the paranormal community.  The internet is full of people claiming to have captured an image of an orb in a picture or on video.  Opinions on evidence vary, but they generally fall into three categories: dust, bugs, or other types of light refractions.  I’m not here to make judgements on other people’s experiences or to try to debunk anything.  Everyone must come to their own conclusions about what is real or not.

I do believe that orbs are one way that spirits visibly manifest.  Perhaps this is because it takes less energy to appear as a ball of light than it does to show a fully developed human form.  I have had a few experiences with orbs, both in spirit dreams and while awake.  Many times, I have woken in the middle of the night to find orbs hovering either over or near my bed.  When I see them, they look like glowing, nearly transparent bubbles with a thicker outer ring.  I have seen them in an array of colors including red, pink, yellow, orange, gold, white, silver, and blue.  Sometimes they are even multicolored.  I always question my experiences because I feel that is it healthy to reserve a level of skepticism when facing something out of the ordinary.  However, I keep an open mind to the existence of spirits and have faith that they exist.

One time in college, I woke up to see a large, glowing silver orb floating above my bed.  It was easily bigger than a basketball and was oblong in shape.  My husband, then boyfriend, George, was asleep next to me.  I remember gazing up and feeling positive emotions coming from it, although I don’t remember hearing any specific words.  I watched as it floated over my bed and through the wall next to mine.  Then I went back to sleep.

Another time I saw an orb, I was home alone.  My husband was out running errands.  I was in the bathroom fixing my hair, when my cat, Diana, wandered in behind me.  Like many cats, she loves to follow me around the house.  She sat down on the bathmat to watch me.  As I looked over to her, I noticed her look to the side as if she saw something.  Her eyes were focused in on something, so I followed her gaze.  As I turned, I saw a little golden ball of light zip through the bathroom door.  It was stationary long enough for me to tell that it was there and then it disappeared.  Diana had followed it with her eyes the whole time.

A couple of weeks later, I was in my bedroom when I saw another orb.  It was a cloudy day, so the light in the bedroom was dim.  The blinds were drawn, so there wasn’t much light coming in from outside.  Diana was sitting by my closet, when suddenly she looked up at my ceiling in the same way that she had a few weeks earlier.  I looked up expecting to see a spider or something.  Instead, there was a little ball of light playing near my closet.  It hung around for a few seconds before disappearing.

Each time that I saw the orbs, they looked like little round balls of light, but solid, as if I could have reached out and touched them.  I am intrigued that they appeared in areas of my apartment that I feel have a lot of spirit energy.  The bathroom is a source of water, so it is not unusual to feel spirit energies in that area.  I also think that my closet serves as a type of portal, but that’s another story.

Note on the picture: Yes, those are bubbles in the photo. I used them because this picture was the closest thing that I could find to depict the concept of an orb at this time.

Grandma’s Visit

Thanks to Matthew from New York for this story!

It was a hot, summer day.  Matthew worked in construction and had been at it since early that morning.  The apartment was quiet.  His mother was out shopping and visiting her friends.  She wouldn’t be home for another few hours.  After a long shower, Matthew went into his bedroom and pulled down the shades to block out the late afternoon sun.  He set up a fan by his bed to help keep him cool.  Before getting into bed, he lit a Saint Theresa candle and placed it on top of his dresser.  Matthew often lit candles and said prayers for his grandmother, Tessie.  She had died the year before after a hard battle with cancer.

Exhausted, Matthew flopped into bed and was soon in a deep sleep.  He began to dream that he was at a carnival with his girlfriend.  For some reason, they were playing a game of hide and seek in the dream.  He said that he chased her from ride to ride, always to lose sight of her the second that he was about to catch her.  At one point in the dream, he saw her disappear into a fun house, so he followed her in.  He started running down a hallway lined with mirrors when he suddenly heard someone calling his name.

“Matthew!”

He turned around to see Grandma Tessie standing in one of the mirrors.  She called out to him again.  As he walked toward her, he found himself back in his room.  Only he wasn’t awake because he could see himself lying fast asleep in his bed.  Confused, he was wondering what was happening, when his grandmother appeared once again.  This time she materialized next to him in the bedroom.

“Matthew, you’re sleeping.  Wake up!  The candle is about to burst into flames.”

This took him completely out of the dream.  He felt his body hit the bed.  Matthew sat up just in time to watch the candle’s glass break.  The candle fell over and rolled on the dresser.  In a flash, Matthew jumped out of bed and was able to snuff out the flame.  Had he not been awake at that moment, the candle would have set the dresser on fire.

Glimpse of a Reaper

One of the things that bothers me about being psychic is the inability to control it or the type of information that I receive. I am not a psychic consultant or spiritual practitioner like my mother who makes her living from her abilities, so in many cases, the information just gets dumped into my head without much warning. Perhaps this is something every person with psychic abilities deals with.

I have had premonitions of death before. I knew that there was something wrong with my Grandfather months before he started showing any signs of illness. Loved ones have visited me in dreams to tell me that they are getting ready to pass. Again, I have no control over this. Sometimes I get messages and sometimes I don’t. It’s as simple as that.

Years ago, I was doing the dishes while my husband was taking care of our sick canary, Tweety. As I was running the water over my hands, I got an image of Tweety dying. I started to shake it off, only to hear my husband scream out the bird’s name from the other room. I dropped the dish I was washing, turned the water off, and ran into our living room. Tweety had passed away in my husband’s hands.

Over the past six months, I had started to worry about our pet parakeet, Skye. He was already seven years old, but seemed healthy enough. I put it down to my own anxiety and dismissed the worries as much as possible, but the ominous feeling kept nagging at me from time to time. Then a few weeks ago, Skye started losing his feathers on his lower quarters and seemed to have a protrusion of some kind, so my husband and I took him to the vet.

After the examination, the vet told us that there were two possibilities. Either, Skye was overweight and that was causing his feathers to fall out or he had a tumor. The vet explained that if it was a tumor, Skye would probably die from complications or shock from the surgery. If it wasn’t that, he was just too fat and losing weight would help. He advised us to change Skye’s diet and keep him as comfortable as possible.

We took Skye home and followed the vet’s instructions. While Skye’s feathers started to grow back, he also began having issues with his balance. He didn’t move around the cage as much and he stopped talking. Losing balance and being on the bottom of the cage were two of the things that the vet had warned us could be signs of a tumor, which again was inoperable.

Our apartment has large bay windows that look out over the small courtyard and pathway that runs through our housing complex. Last week, my husband and I were talking to my mother on speaker phone, when I spied a dark, hooded figure standing in the garden. The figure looked to be at least six or seven feet tall and was wearing a black cloak. It was around 6pm, but there was plenty of light coming from the lamp posts and the neighboring school’s soccer field. As I turned to get a better look, the apparition walked through the wrought iron stair railing by our house and vanished. The figure had appeared completely solid one minute and then dematerialized. I do not recall seeing a face of any sort, just blackness beneath the dark hood.

I told my husband that someone had been in the garden. He checked, but didn’t see anyone. I couldn’t get a reading on the spirit to figure out if it was benign, malevolent, female, or male. Freaked out, I closed the blinds and did a cleansing of the house. I had seen shadowy figures before, but never anything like that. I called my mom and told her about the apparition. I said that it reminded of an entity, rather than a ghost. The figure had immediately made me think of Death.

I felt a little better after the cleansing and decided to go to bed earlier than usual. For some reason, I didn’t want to be up alone by myself. This is odd for me since I am naturally a night person. Skye chirped at me when I came into the bedroom. He had taken to telling me off for disturbing him in the middle of the night as he got older. I fixed his cage cover and told him to go back to sleep.

The next morning, I woke up and found Skye lying dead at the bottom of his cage. He had passed sometime in the night. Up until this moment, I didn’t believe in the Grim Reaper. Now, I’m not so sure.

A Grave Message

Thanks to Linda from New Jersey for this story!

As mentioned in an earlier Ghost Post, Her Daughter’s Guardian Angel, Linda has psychic abilities.  This often results in prophetic dreams, which frequently spook her family.  This particular incident happened when Linda was in her late twenties.

In St. Raymond’s Cemetery in Bronx, NY, there is a mausoleum that holds several generations of Linda’s family.  Linda’s great-grandfather, Carmine, set this up so that the family would always stay together.  Great-grandfather Carmine’s son, called Papa Nick, was deeply fond of his daughter-in-law, Vera.  Vera is Linda’s mother.  Even after her mother and father divorced, Papa Nick stayed close with Vera.

One night, Linda had a dream where she heard Papa Nick call out.

“Vera, help me!  I’m drowning!”

This dream occurred two times in a row.  When she mentioned the incident to her mother, Vera said that Papa Nick must be trying to tell them something important.  The most confusing part was that while Linda was the one having the dream, Papa Nick kept calling for her mother.

After the second dream, Linda called her father to ask how Papa Nick had died.  Was it at sea or on a boat?  He answered that her grandfather had died of a stroke.  When he asked her what had brought this question up, Linda told her father about the strange recurring dream.

“Maybe you’d better go visit Papa Nick in the cemetery and see if everything is okay.”

Her father promised that he would go check.  The next day he called and explained what had happened.  He had gone to the cemetery to find that a sewer pipe had backed up and flooded the mausoleum floor.  One of the coffins floating in the water was Papa Nick’s.  Thankfully, they found out in time and none of the coffins were damaged.  It just goes to show you that when spirits want to make contact, they will find a way.
